Between the early 80's and mid 90's, Barbara ran commercial law departments for law firms in all 4 cities.  In 1995 Rodger was transferred back to Portland.  Barbara went back to the Tarlow firm which was then named Tarlow Jordan & Schrader and is now Jordan Ramis PC, where she managed commercial law cases until 2000 when she started to work on a new career.

In 2002 Barbara obtained her PI license.  She also convinced Rodger to obtain his PI license after years with Fortune 500 companies in high level management and corporate securities positions.  They started Free Lance Investigations and began the career they both enjoy today.  When their son Scot retired from the US Army after 20 years, he returned to Oregon with his wife and family.  Scot joined Free Lance and this family run company is what you see today.

Barbara was also instrumental in the  formation of the Oregon Paralegal Association in the 70's.  She was a charter member, two term past president and held about every position over the years.  She still promotes OPA and is known for mentoring both paralegals and private investigators.  She is a frequent speaker at seminars on legal subjects including skip tracing, creditors' rights and process serving.

Barbara left that job after several years for additional positions with attorneys in Portland.  In the early 70's she worked with a Beaverton firm of Bolliger, Hampton & Tarlow.  There she was introduced to a new profession,  Legal Assistants (aka Paralegals).  Individuals fully trained to handle interviews, preparation of pleadings, investigations, etc.  The Legal Assistants at that firm had their own secretaries to handle the paperwork. Wow, what a great idea. Off to Portland Community College for night classes while she worked days.  She met Alonzo Stiner, an attorney teaching litigation. He was teaching in order to find a paralegal to handle his insurance defense practice.  He hired Barbara and she was introduced to  full case responsibility and trial assisting.  Eventually Barbara returned to Bolliger, Hampton & Tarlow as a Legal Assistant.  She worked there until she met and married Rodger in 1982.  She followed his career in Seattle, New Orleans, Orlando and last, but not least, Knoxville, Tennessee.

PIONEER, STUDENT, MENTOR, PARALEGAL, BUSINESS OWNER, PI, MOM, SPEAKER and TEACHER are a few terms that come to mind.

Barbara was born and raised in Portland, Oregon having graduated from Tigard High School in 1964. This was the same year she started her first legal secretarial position for an attorney in Portland.  He represented a company called Creditors Protective Association, the grandparent of Oregon Association of Credit Management.  That position was one that required her to handle the case from the time it came in the office through collection.  The attorney was Mort Winkel.  Seems like a billion years ago.
